Get More Out Of Your Networking

When it comes to networking events are you the wallflower that sits on the sidelines or are you trying to Red Rover your way into those tight knit circles of people who are already twenty minutes deep into making connections?

It’s no secret that networking can be a nerve wracking experience, especially if you’re more of an introvert. Putting yourself out there AND representing your business can be a huge task for some people. However, you might be surprised by how easy building connections can become when you shift your reason for going.

Tammy Urbach, CEO and President of the Networking Referral Group, 4BR, says it’s important to think about what you can offer to other people and ways to be a resource instead of thinking about what you can get. Here are five easy ways to get more out of your networking:

  1. Set a reasonable goal for how many people you want to talk to at the event.

  2. Bring a buddy so there’s always more to talk about when the conversation runs dry.

  3. Don’t just scoop up a ton of business cards and call your networking successful.

  4. Definitely don’t email/call people if you didn’t speak to them in person.

  5. A little liquid courage can go a long way (just don’t go overboard)!
